This software has been placed into the public domain in september 1990 to establish a reference point for comparing the performance of PC compatible VGA systems. The 3Dbenchmark is arrived at by timing one cycle of a continuous 3-dimensional demonstration and then calculating the average number of screen updates the computer system has achieved in one second (frames per second - fps). It's one of the simpliest programs.

ArchMark is a purely synthetic graphics benchmark that measures throughput for specific parts of a rendering pipeline while trying to avoid being bottlenecked by anything else. Surface Deformer is a small OpenGL benchmark that stresses the vertex processing unit (vertex pipelines). A mesh plane made of 2 millions of triangular polygons and 1 million of vertices is deformed in realtime by a GLSL vertex shader. The benchmark uses a GL 2.0 codepath for the realtime shaders and stores the whole mesh in a VBO in order to limit the CPU-GPU transfert effect. The performance measure lasts 1 minute, the o3Mark score is the number of frames that have been displayed during the benchmark. Surface Deformer also includes a stability test mode, which is useful to test your graphics card during your overcloking sessions.

PhysX FluidMark is a physics benchmark based on NVIDIA PhysX engine. This benchmark performs a fluid simulation by imitating the renderering of lava. Real physics parameters such as viscosity are used. SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) algorithm is enabled to increase the realism of the simulation. The utility offers a number of settings and includes a stability test. This is a fun little demo of a procedurally generated tree. It allows you to create a tree of varying size, shape and complexity. Be careful though, if you dial up the complexity (depth) too high on a non T&L accelerated graphics card, things can get REAL slow. This little demo also turned out to be useful as a benchmark. nVidia has also released a few similar demos. All of them can be found at the company's website.

UMark is a Windows graphical interface that allows to easily configure and run benchmarks on Unreal Tournament 2004. Benchmarking with UMark is very flexible, as it can run totally customizable benchmarks. At the same time, it also offers standard benchmarking which imitates the official UT2004 benchmark batch file tests. UMark also provides an engine for gathering results, which can also be customly set compare results against eachother. Results can be generated as coloured bar graphs, stored in HTML snippets.
